About us

The Lanius-Knab winery has been family-owned for 250 years. Since 1991, the business has constantly been raised and expanded by Jörg Lanius. In 1992, the establishment moved into an art nouveau villa with a two-floored vaulted cellar; step by step, more vineyards were bought. In that way, the business went from a sideline of a 2-hectare cultivation area to a full-time winery that cultivates 12 hectares of the steepest vinicultural area. Since 1995, we have been part of the VDP (the Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates, abbreviated VDP). Our wine grows in the VDP-classified vineyard locations Engehöller Bernstein and Engehöller Goldemund as well as the Oberweseler Oelsberg, locations which were already supreme-classified in the Prussian vineyard classification of 1801. Low yields, eco-minded cultivation and selective hand-picking are the recipe for maintaining natural uniqueness and authenticity. The grapes are handed gently into the wine cellar, with the most critical step being slow fermentation for its maturity.

Products & Services

85 percent of our cultivation is Riesling, with 10 percent being Pinot Noir and the remaining 5 percent as Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Müller-Thurgau and Dornfelder. Our Rieslings are particularly expressive and mineral, providing winemaker Jörg Lanius with a solid foundation to produce exceptional wine consistently. With an area of 12 hectares, we focus on producing natural wines that make each location's peculiarities and the vintage come alive - from the dry Estate -Riesling to the sweet specialties Auslese and ice wine.

Riesling and Pinot Noir Estate are bottled wines from the Mittelrhein wine area in Germany. Low yields, eco-minded cultivation and selective hand-picking are the recipe for maintaining natural uniqueness and authenticity. The grapes are handed gently into the wine cellar, with the most critical step being slow fermentation for its maturity. The outcome is authentic wines full of character with extraordinary durability!

2022 Rheinschiefer Riesling Dry (Classification: VDP.Ortswein)

This Riesling lives up to its name - the wine is juicy and harmonious and impresses with mineral elegance. Its fine aroma combines the fruity notes of apricots with a fine slate minerality. The location Engehöller Bernstein, opposite the Schoenburg castle, is on the side valley of the Rhine. The vineyard faces south, where the grapes are grown on steep rows and can soak up the sun. Slate geologically dominates the soil there.

2021 Bernstein Am Lauerbaum GG Riesling Dry (Classification: VDP.Großes Gewächs)

This dry Riesling GG from the cadaster location „Am Lauerbaum” appears lightly golden in the glass. Swaying it, it flows quite slowly because of its high density. The scent of blossom honey is framed by fresh peach and piquant-sweet herbs. On the palate, the Riesling is reminiscent of ripe pineapple. The juicy fruit flavour is accentuated by a pleasant piquancy. Absolutely harmonious with a long finish!

2022 Oberweseler In der Rheinhell Riesling Dry (Classification: VDP.Erste Lage)

The Riesling Oberweseler In der Rheinhell is an outstanding rarity descending from our oldest vineyard with ungrafted vines over 70 years old. This dry Riesling has a rich variety of flavours and a charming scent of exotic fruits. This wine is still young, but its power and elegance already give an extraordinary pleasure! The well-balanced acidity structure provides the wine with long storability.

2022 Lanius-Knab Riesling Semi-Dry (Classification: VDP.Gutswein)

The 2022 Lanius-Knab Riesling has a fresh scent of peach and lemon. On the palate, a delicate minerality plays along with a lively acidity. The location gives the wine particular clarity, freshness, and a full taste of typical fruit and citrus notes. The Riesling grows on the steep slopes around Oberwesel. On steep slate terraces, the vines are rooted deep into the rock, allowing for the production of elegant Rieslings with mineral notes.

2022 Engehöller Bernstein Riesling Semi-Dry (Classification: VDP.Erste Lage)

The semi-dry Engehöller Bernstein fulfils every aspiration. It is as fruity as piquant and briskly minerally with a well-integrated acidity. The scent is reminiscent of elderflower, followed by an aroma of nectarine and orange. It is a wine with great elegance and a long finish. Erste Lage is the designation for prime vineyards with outstanding characteristics that provide optimal growing conditions and are proven to produce a record of consistently high-quality wines.

2021 Engehöller Bernstein Riesling Spätlese Fruity (Classification: VDP.Erste Lage)

The late harvest makes this Riesling exceptional, with a cornucopia of enchanting, exotic fruit aromas. On the palate, the perfectly balanced Riesling acidity gives the wine an almost endless freshness. The late harvest provides delicate spices and minerals combined with great density. With elegant sweetness, this is a delightful bottle to enjoy at any time of the year.

2019 Bernstein Am Lauerbaum Riesling Auslese Sweet (Classification: VDP.Große Lage)

The sweet Auslese from the cadaster location „Am Lauerbaum” is ripe and elegant. The intense scent of dried apricots, dates, and vineyard peaches plays with the delicate note of cherry blossoms. The interaction between sweetness and acidity makes the wine appear fresh despite the high density. An attractive minerality tops the full-bodied impression. The VDP.Große Lage designation is reserved for Germany’s best vineyards, where sites are delineated parcel by parcel.

2021 Oberwesel Pinot noir Red wine Dry (Classification: VDP.Ortswein)

The dry Pinot Noir is intensely red and smells like cherries with a hint of marzipan. It has a pleasant smoky note, and well-integrated, soft tannins round off the balanced red wine. Pinot Noir is a demanding grape variety and is grown only in the most suitable vineyard site. Opposite the Schoenburg castle near Oberwesel lies our Engehöller Bernstein vineyard. The wine is produced here in steep rows in the side valley of the romantic Rhine.

2021 Engehöller Bernstein Pinot noir Red wine Dry (Classification: VDP.Erste Lage)

The dry Pinot Noir from the Engehöller Bernstein vineyard has a dark ruby red colour in the glass. Delicate notes of black cherry accentuate blackcurrant, and the high density of this Pinot Noir is noticeable even on the nose. On the palate, it is lushly harmonious, characterised by the soft fruit and a pleasant tannin structure. The Pinot Noir is mineral and pleasantly astringent at the same time. Slightly warming, it offers a long finish. Harmonious, but by no means boring!

2018 Engehöller Bernstein Pinot noir Red wine Barrique Dry (Classification: VDP.Erste Lage)

Originating from the Erste Lage, this red wine represents itself as proud and powerful. Intensive spicy notes join candied fruits, sugar candy and currants; this appears smooth and elegant – opulent flavours in a silken dress. Pinot Noir is a demanding grape variety and is grown only in the most suitable vineyard site. Opposite the Schoenburg castle near Oberwesel lies our Engehöller Bernstein vineyard. The wine is produced here in the side valley of the romantic Rhine.
