About us

Situated in the middle of the German Wine Road, Dr. Josef Köhr crafts unique wines grown at the estate’s traditional vineyard plots in Ruppertsberg (Pfalz) and its surroundings.

The favourable micro-climate of the region is owed to the exposition at the foot of the Pfälzerwald mountainside. As a part of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the Pfälzerwald is Germany’s largest continuous forest area and seamlessly merges with the French Northern Vosges.

Impressive castle ruins situated alongside pastoral forest passages are contemporary witnesses of the region’s moved past. The first documented vineyard ownership of the family dates back to the year 1648 and exhibits the deep-rootedness of the family in the region.

Today, Dr. Josef Köhr cultivates in equal shares white and red grape varieties on a total area of 16 ha. The oldest vineyard plots have been in the family for 200 years and are planted with vines aged up to 40 years.

These plots constitute the foundation of the winery’s premium wines. Riesling and Pinot constitute the estate’s most important grape varieties.

Wine Estate

Riesling and Pinot constitute the most traditional grape varieties of the estate and the region. Gewürztraminer is another traditional grape of relevance.

More recently Sauvignon blanc has gained significant momentum and share in the estate's grape repertoire.

In the red segment, the traditional Pinot noir has been complemented by international grapes, such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot

2021 Blanc de Blancs Réserve unfiltered

Nouveauté Blanc de Blancs - a white wine cuvée made from Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc. The 18-month maturation in both new and used French barriques is special for this cuvée. The bouquet presents itself elegantly with aromas of apricots, pear and brioche.

2020 Pinot noir Réserve unfiltered

A Pinot Noir elegant, powerful and long-lasting! Grown in our famous Ruppertsberg Nußbien vineyard, characterized by calcareous colourful sandstone soil. Fermented on the skins for over a month. The maturation took place for at least 30 months in French barriques with regular bâtonnage. This Pinot noir shows highly saturated reflexes of ruby red colour in the glass.

2023 Riesling Hambach

Our Riesling village wine is made from grapes sourced from our vineyards in the village of Hambach, situated just below the Hambach castle. The wine is characterised by its refined varietal aroma and a refreshing acidity. Slow fermentation at moderate temperatures under controlled conditions lead to a wine with high expression of varietal aroma. The lively acidity originates from the slightly cooler climatic conditions in the village of Hambach compared to Ruppertsberg.
