About us

With a very rich wine-growing tradition dating back to 1509, Weingut Spiess is one of the more traditional and historic wineries in Rheinhessen Germany.

Our major grape varieties are Riesling, Weißburgunder (Pinot blanc), Grauburgunder (Pinot gris), Chardonnay, Spätburgunder (Pinot noir), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah.

We cultivate 43 hectares of south facing vineyards in the warm southern part of Rheinhessen, embedded in the gently rolling landscapes of the towns of Bechtheim and Oppenheim. These vineyards offer ideal conditions for juicy, complex wines with elegant charm, each bottle of our wines also reflects the region's unique blend of warmth, fertile loess-clay soils and calcareous substratum terroir.

Our goal is to make great wines, that's our highest quest year after year. Through our focus on premium quality, we have established ourselves as the front runner among the Rheinhessen wine producers over the past 20 years, and are able to offer wine lovers all over the world the highest level of enjoyment.

Riederbacherhof, the quintessential part of our winery and famliy

Christian is our vineyard manager: from pruning to harvest, our vineyard is his stage.

Johannes is our cellar master: from pressing to bottling, he controls everything in the cellar.

We follow a approach of holistic, nature-oriented wine production with deep respect for nature

Our wines reflects a blend of warmth, fertile loess-clay soils and calcareous substratum terroir.

We are one of the first wineries in Germany to give up casks and switch to barriques completely.

Our cellar is cooled with water from natural streams, the water also provides the perfect humidity.

Bechtheimer Hasensprung Pinot Noir

Gault&Millau: 4 Red Grapes | Lagen Cup: 94

Originates from the Grand Cru vineyard of Bechtheimer Hasensprung, renowned for its wind-sheltered, cooler location, and clay-ferrous siallite soil, we only select small-berried grapes from Burgundian clones and our most exceptional barrels for this wine. It offers integrated oak, a youthful aroma of herbs and cherries, and a palate with elegant tannins, crisp acidity, and mineral salinity. A harmonious balance of density, focus, and rich flavor.

Chardonnay »R« trocken

Gault&Millau: 5 Grapes
"A parade Chardonnay. Caramel candy and café au lait meet applesauce and yellow plum. Wood-influenced style, yet light and refreshing thanks to the balanced acidity. Wonderful. It is a tangible proof of skilled wood handling: not overloaded in the slightest, but elegant and finely
structured." (Gault Millau, 2020)
Chardonnay »Reserve« is a selection from our most spectacular small oak barrels. Only the densest and aromatically complex, yet finest barrels are chosen.

Bechtheimer Geyersberg Riesling trocken

Lagen Cup: 95 | James Suckling: 92
Strength and expressiveness are exemplary attributes of the wines from Geyersberg. The announcement in the aroma is very clear and fresh, with hints of acacia and a scent of Yuzu. As expected, it appears characterful, distinctive, and mineral, already somewhat mature, but it will need time in the bottle to continue aging. Thanks to its dry taste, Geyersberg displays all its precision in the finish.
